Christian grew up in the Brooks Bar neighborhood of Old Trafford with his five brothers and sisters and his parents, who immigrated from Dublin, Ireland: Daniel Christian and Margaret Christian (formerly Cullen). When Christian was two years old, one of his siblings passed away.
He attended St Alphonsus’ RC Primary School on Ayres Road in Old Trafford and later went to St Bede’s College in Manchester. His father worked as a fork-lift truck operator at Esso in Trafford Park. Although he enrolled at Thames Polytechnic (now the University of Greenwich) in London, he got kicked out of his biology course because of his poor attendance.
Christian made his first national TV appearance in 1981 alongside other unemployed young people from inner-city areas of Manchester on Devil’s Advocate, a Granada Television program produced for ITV by the World In Action team.
